much has been posted about the recent superbowlfest, so i don't want to repeat too much, especially after the synopsis that country girl posted:.

i was busting a gut at work so i could get there, hence my silence during the lead up to the fest.
ross,
glad you had a good time. There is much to see in the states.....

ok friends.....multi part question for you..... 1) what do you think is the view of the jw organization toward people with disabilities ?.
2) what are your personal views ?
(pwd as workers, parents, objects of affection, intimate partners).
continuing....
My experience with JWs was that there was no negative response to an physically disabled individual; except the typical " oh he needs the new system to be healed" etc. I find that very condescending and trite.
Although the handicapped individual was still expected to put some time in the field service; and using the disability as an excuse to not preach would not be tolerated.
I have never encountered any negative impression in business concerning anyone with a physical disability...

personaly, I have no objections to my children marrying anyone with a physical disability.....it is my childs choice of companionship. Why would I question that?
I designed residential "skysrapers" in NYC during the 1980s when the Disabilities Act was passed. In NYC it was call "local law 58" and made it mandatory that any "multiple dwelling" of more than 4 units had to comply with current; specific ADA standards; specifically bathroom and kitchen clearences; radius; clear floor area; kitchen workspace height and door approach clearences. Of course, the obvious of ramping; etc.
It was a big financial step for the developers ( Trump being one of them) because the rest of the industry had not yet responded to supply the goods to make this happen. It was not all just a design solution; someone had to make a work counter 34" high; etc.
Many items were already standard institutional fixtures ( hosptials have always complied), like grab bars. And while we did not have to install grab bars; there had to be specific wall blocking for a possible future installation.
When the ADA legislation became National; it was suddenly all the rage to have ADA compliant ANYTHING.
Every job I work on now is fully ADA compliant and accessable.
It gives you much respect for what our handicap fellow Americans have to deal with.
to those who have conscientiously walked away:.
what changes will at least make you consider coming back in?.
of course some will say nothing they do will lure them back?
it is not a matter of "what to go back to" as it is a fact that my life has moved "beyond" the need for the "organized" religious experience.
The spiritual needs of my life transcend going to any church or subscribing to any organized worship.
I am a product of my experiences....as we all are.
i posted this about 2 years ago and just came across it again today.
its definately worth re-posting.
last week while travelling i stopped at a zany brainy store and saw that they had a blimp for sale.
funny!
thanks for sharing
one of the anomalies of the jehovah's witness worldview is that it "carries" its non-violence hand-in-hand with some fairly violent practices towards its young ones.
so, the jehovah's witness father or mother who would reject any involvement in the military or "turn the other cheek" if physically attacked in field service, has no qualms about yanking their noisy child out of the kingdom hall and giving that child a good thrashing (i.e., beating on the buttocks, legs, arms and back) and creating an even greater noise.
i am not a parent, but over the years of observing parents - and others - hitting children both inside and outside the kingdom hall, it slowly occurred to me just what a barbaric practice this was.
upside down
you make some very good points.....
"ceasars law" does stop them in many ways from being even worse....
of all the privileges only brothers may have, doing mics seemed to be one of the most tedious.
it was definitely something you could graduate from... but why?
when i was the sound guy, it was always so hard to get brothers to do the mics.
yes, I did the mikes; and all kinds of other stuff. I was a "baptized brother" ....chuckle, chuckle
This alone should sound a bell in intelligent womens heads in this organization. We are living in a time and age when women ARE ON AN EQUAL FOOTING with men in society. Women hold public office and are CEOs in major corporations. Equal pay for equal work. It is customary for women to be educated and to work; just like men. Perhaps the percentages are not yet 100% equal yet; but is unparralled in any other time of history.
Yet in the wonderfully "simplistic" world of the Jehovahs Witness; women are still treated like 2nd class citizens. They cannot conduct a meeting or give a public talk. They are discouraged to achieve higher education more than the young men. If a baptized brother is present they cannot conduct a book study or meeting for field service. They must be "subservient" to the male. Chattel? Draconian thinking? Domination or control of your lifes partner? Why?
What possible purpose does this serve?
My wife would react to that kind of lifestyle; and I would not want ANYONE treating my daughter with that type of mentality.
Ignorant; unintelligent; unsophisticated ; uncivilized; uneducated thinking in its MOST BLATANT FORM.....
...they were ALL boring....
(this question does not include the field service one.
the little introduction and then the preaching after it.
when i went, i thought the most useless meeting was that kingdom ministry meeting.
I always thought it was the sunday morning public talk at 9:30 AM; hated getting up for that.
